Bottle Sourcing 度量衡

How to Spec a Bottle — Materials, Tradeoffs & Decision Points for Western Corporate Clients Ordering from China
Prepared Feb 2026 • 24 References • Live Taobao Data

度量衡 (dù liáng héng) — knowing how to spec a category. What dimensions matter, what tradeoffs exist, what choices cascade into what consequences. This guide is the 度量衡 of bottles: the complete spec language a sourcing agent needs before talking to a single factory.

Market Snapshot — Live from Taobao (Feb 2026)

To ground this guide in real market data, we pulled live listings from Taobao across three bottle categories[24]. This is what Chinese domestic buyers actually see, buy, and review — and what the factories behind these products are capable of producing for your client.

保温杯 (Insulated Bottles) — 10,000+ listings

Data PointWhat Taobao ShowsWhat It Means for Your Client
Price range¥59.9 (~$8.20) budget → ¥699 (~$96) premium titaniumFactory cost is a fraction of retail. The ¥59.9 bottles are SS304 vacuum at scale — proves the $2.50-3.50 FOB floor is real

Top brands富光 (Fuguang), 膳魔师 (Thermos), 苏泊尔 (Supor), 希诺 (Heenoor), 小米 (Xiaomi), 名创优品 (Miniso)These brands all use Yongkang OEM factories. Your client's bottle comes from the same supply chain

运动水壶 (Sports Bottles) — 1,000+ listings

Data PointWhat Taobao ShowsImplication
Material split塑料 (plastic), 食品级塑料 (food-grade plastic), Tritan explicitly listed, 304/316 SSTritan is a recognized consumer-facing material in China now — not just a factory spec. Buyers search for it by name
Price range¥19.9 (迪卡侬/Decathlon cycling bottle) → ¥499 (bablov 316L)Plastic/Tritan sports bottles are ¥20-100 retail (~$3-14). SS sports bottles ¥150-500 (~$21-69)
Trending format"吨桶" / "吨吨杯" (ton barrel) — oversized gym bottles 1.5-2.5LIf the client's audience is fitness-oriented, the large-format trend is real and accelerating in Asia
Brands富光, 乐扣乐扣 (Lock&Lock), UZSPACE/优之, Nike, 迪卡侬International brands (Nike, Decathlon, Lock&Lock) source from same Chinese factories

玻璃水杯定制 (Custom Glass Cups) — 500 listings

Data PointWhat Taobao ShowsImplication
Glass types耐热玻璃, 水晶玻璃, 普通玻璃, 进口食品级钢化玻璃Four glass grades available. "Heat-resistant" (borosilicate) is the right spec for hot-drink bottles
Price range¥5.7 (~$0.78) budget double-wall glass → ¥199 (~$27) Fuguang premiumCustom logo glass cups start under $1 at scale. Double-wall glass (防烫/anti-scald) is the dominant format
"定制logo刻字"Major search term with high listing densityCustom logo engraving is a mature, standard service — not a special request. Factories expect it
Scenarios listed日常送礼, 商用, 运动, 婚庆"商用" (commercial/business use) is an explicit Taobao category — validates corporate gifting demand
What the buyer reviews reveal

From the top-rated 保温杯 review data: buyers ask about plastic smell from gasket after pouring hot water (answer: no smell on quality products), drop durability ("用着很好用, 一直到现在也好好的"), and cleaning difficulty with tea/coffee stains ("倒入奶茶不仅非常难洗,还有味道"). These are the exact pain points your client should test for in samples.

1. Material Options & Tradeoffs

Material is Decision #1. It cascades into cost, compliance, branding, and target market. The global stainless steel water bottle market was valued at USD 1.25B in 2023, projected to reach USD 2.41B by 2033 at 6.79% CAGR[1] — the category is growing and the specs matter more as competition increases.

MaterialCost (FOB/unit, 3K+ qty)StrengthsWeaknessesBest For
SS304 (18/8) STANDARD $2.50–3.50[2] FDA-compliant, 18% Cr / 8% Ni per ASTM A240[3], excellent corrosion resistance, 100% recyclable Heavier than plastic, requires coating for color Corporate gifts, outdoor, everyday drinkware. Industry default used by Hydro Flask, YETI, Stanley, Klean Kanteen[4]
SS316 (18/10) PREMIUM $3.50–5.50[2] Medical-grade, contains 2-3% molybdenum for salt/acid resistance[5] 20-40% more expensive than 304 Baby products, marine environments, premium brands
SS201 CAUTION $1.50–2.50 Cheap, easy to form Higher manganese content (5.5-7.5%) replaces nickel — lower corrosion resistance, higher metal leaching risk under acidic conditions[6] Outer shells only. Major Chinese factories are phasing it out for food-contact surfaces[5]
Tritan (Eastman copolyester) $0.80–1.50 BPA-free, transparent, impact-resistant, lightweight[7] No insulation, scratches over time, perceived as "plastic" Gym bottles, kids, budget promos, where visibility matters
Borosilicate Glass $1.20–2.50 Chemically inert, premium feel, transparent, no taste transfer[8] Fragile, heavy, expensive to ship, needs silicone sleeve Tea/infusion bottles, wellness brands, desk use
Aluminum $1.00–2.50 Lightweight, recyclable, good print surface[8] Dents easily, requires food-safe epoxy inner lining, poor vacuum insulation Single-wall sport bottles, event giveaways
PP (Polypropylene) $0.50–1.20 Cheapest, lightweight, food-safe[7] Looks/feels cheap, stains, retains odor Mass giveaways, disposable promos
Recommendation for Western corporate clients: SS304 double-wall vacuum insulated is the sweet spot — same grade used by every premium brand on the market[4]. SS316 only if the brief specifically calls for premium/baby/medical. Tritan if budget is the primary constraint and insulation isn't needed.

2. Capacity, Dimensions & Fit

Chinese factories spec everything in millimeters and milliliters. Western clients think in ounces and inches. This mismatch is the #1 source of sourcing disputes — always confirm specs in both systems in writing. The most common error: confusing 500ml (16.9oz) with 16oz (473ml). A 27ml difference changes the mold.

Standard Capacities

CapacityozTypical HeightDiameterUse Case
350ml12oz~175mm / 6.9"~65mmCompact, kids, espresso
473ml16oz~200mm / 7.9"~68mmStandard coffee tumbler
500ml16.9oz~210mm / 8.3"~70mmMost popular globally[9]
591ml20oz~230mm / 9.1"~72mmActive lifestyle
710ml24oz~250mm / 9.8"~73mmSports, outdoor
946ml32oz~270mm / 10.6"~78mmHeavy hydration, gym
1180ml40oz~300mm / 11.8"~90mmAll-day hydration (Stanley Quencher trend)

Heights and diameters are approximate and vary by manufacturer. Based on aggregated product spec sheets[9][10]. The 12-20oz segment held the largest market share in 2023[1].

Cupholder Compatibility — Critical Fit Dimension

Standard car cupholders range from 64mm to 89mm (2.5" to 3.5") depending on the vehicle[11]. A common midpoint is ~83mm (3.25"). If the client's end-users are commuters or drivers, keep body diameter under 80mm to fit most vehicles. Bottles above 90mm diameter (like 40oz tumblers) will not fit standard cupholders — this is a known tradeoff of the large-format trend.

Neck / Mouth Opening

Neck finish is specified as a two-number code (e.g. 38-400) where the first number is outer thread diameter in mm and the second is the thread specification[12].

Mouth TypeDiameterProsCons
Narrow28mm[12]Spill-resistant, sip-friendly, fits standard lidsCan't add ice, hard to clean
Standard38mm[12]Good balance — fits ice cubes, broad lid compatibilitySlight spill risk without proper lid
Wide-mouth53–63mm[12]Easy to clean, fits large ice, versatile lid ecosystemSplash risk, not great for sipping

Wall Thickness — The Hidden Quality Indicator

Wall thickness is specified in mm and directly affects perceived quality and durability[4]:

ThicknessGradeFeelUse Case
0.3–0.4mmBudget / PromotionalFlexes under grip pressureLow-cost giveaways[4]
0.4–0.6mmStandardSolid, standard premium feelEveryday bottles, vacuum insulated[4]
0.6–1.0mmPremium / OutdoorHeavy, rugged, dent-resistantHigh-end retail, outdoor/sports[4]

For corporate gifts, specify 0.5mm minimum for the inner wall. Ask the factory for a wall-thickness spec sheet — don't assume.

3. Wall Construction & Insulation

TypeCost ImpactInsulation PerformanceWeightUse Case
Single-wall Lowest (–30-40% vs vacuum) None — liquid temp = exterior temp Lightest Budget promos, room-temp water only
Double-wall (air gap) Mid (+15-20%) Mild — prevents condensation, slows heat transfer Moderate Coffee mugs, desk use
Double-wall vacuum STANDARD Baseline for quality bottles Hot 12-24h, cold 24-48h[4] Heaviest Industry standard. Vacuum bottles dominated market share in 2023[1]

How Vacuum Insulation Works

Two stainless steel layers with the air evacuated between them. The vacuum eliminates convection and conduction; a copper or aluminum inner coating reflects radiant heat[4]. The copper/aluminum coating is a premium add-on (+$0.20-0.40/unit per factory quotes[2]).

How to Verify Insulation — Test Protocol

Reputable factories provide thermal performance test reports. The standard test[4]:

4. Lid & Closure Types

The lid is where most user complaints originate and where factories most commonly cut corners. It's also the primary UX differentiator[13].

Lid TypeLeak-proofOne-hand UseEase of CleanDurabilityBest For
Screw CapExcellentNoEasyHigh — no moving partsCommuting, bags[13]
Flip-topGoodYesModerateModerate — hinge weakens with use[13]Gym, driving, cycling
Straw lidGoodYesHard — straw needs brush[13]ModerateDesk, kids, driving
Sport spout / chug capGoodYesHardModerate — sealing gasket wears[13]Sports, gym, outdoor
Press-buttonVery goodYes — one-touchModerateModerate — spring mechanismOffice, premium feel
Loop / carry lidExcellentNoEasyHigh — integrated loop for carabiner[13]Hiking, camping
Lid Material Spec — What to Put in the Contract

PP (polypropylene): Standard, food-safe, cheapest. Most common lid body material[7].
Tritan: Premium, transparent, impact-resistant. +$0.30-0.60/lid[7].
Silicone gasket: Required for leak-proof seal. Insist on food-grade silicone in the contract. Cheap gaskets are the #1 source of leaking complaints — ask the factory how many open/close cycles the gasket is tested to.
Bamboo lid: Aesthetic/eco trend. Not reliably leak-proof without silicone ring. Can crack if repeatedly submerged.

5. Branding & Printing Methods

MethodColorsDurabilityCostBest ForLimitation
Laser Engraving RECOMMENDED Monochrome Permanent — modifies the material surface, survives dishwasher and abrasion indefinitely[14] $$ Corporate logos, premium branding No color. Logo shows as raw steel against coating[15]
Silk Screen 1-3 colors Good — durable, opaque prints on curved surfaces[16] $ Simple logos, text, large print areas Limited colors per pass. No gradients[15]
Pad Print 1-4 colors Good — excellent detail fidelity[16] $ Small/detailed logos on curved surfaces Small print area per stamp
UV Print Full CMYK Moderate — adhesion varies by surface[15] $$ Full-color artwork, photos, complex designs Must test adhesion on samples before committing
Heat Transfer Full color Good — film wraps surface[15] $$ Wrap-around designs, photographic Film edge visible on close inspection
Powder Coating Solid color (body) Excellent — thick, chip-resistant[4] $$ Body color. Matte, gloss, or textured finish Full body treatment only, not for logos
Sublimation Full color Very good — dye penetrates polymer coating[14] $$$ Full-wrap photographic or artistic designs Requires polymer-coated surface. Adds process step
Corporate default: Laser engraving + powder coat body. The logo is permanent[14], the body color matches brand guidelines, and the cost is moderate. For full-color artwork, UV printing on powder-coated surface is the current best option — but always request a print adhesion test sample before committing to production[15].

6. Compliance & Certifications

This is where sourcing projects stall. Your client's legal and procurement teams will ask about these — get ahead of it.

MarketRegulationWhat It TestsNotes
USA FDA 21 CFR[17] Food contact substance safety. Three pathways: Food Contact Notification (FCN), Food Additive Regulation, or Threshold of Regulation exemption Primary pre-market review for any material touching food/drink[17]
California Proposition 65[18] Heavy metals (lead, cadmium), BPA, phthalates Mandatory if any distribution in California. Separate from federal FDA
EU EC 1935/2004 + EU 10/2011[19] Overall Migration Limit (OML) + Specific Migration Limit (SML) — total and individual substance migration testing Framework regulation applies to all food contact materials[19]
Germany LFGB[18] Strictest food contact test in EU — organoleptic (taste/odor) + migration If you pass LFGB, you pass most EU markets. Good default for EU-bound products
EU (BPA-specific) Commission Regulation 2024[20] BPA restriction: 0.05 mg/kg SML. Banned entirely in infant/children's bottles and cups Relevant if using any plastic or epoxy-lined components
Factory Level ISO 9001, BSCI, SEDEX[4] Quality management system, ethical labor practices, social compliance Factory bears certification cost — verify certificates are current (not expired)
Practical Compliance Approach

Ask the factory for existing test reports first — established factories already have FDA and LFGB reports for their standard product lines. You only need new testing if using fully custom molds or non-standard materials. Always request the Declaration of Compliance (DoC)[19] document — this is the factory's formal statement that the product meets the relevant food contact regulations.

7. Cost Structure & MOQ

Unit Pricing — FOB China, 2025-2026

Prices for a standard 500ml (17oz) bottle. Based on published manufacturer pricing from Yongkang-based factories[2][21]:

The same bottle retails for $15-35 in Western markets[4]. MOQ as low as 500 pieces from established factories, but unit cost drops significantly at 3,000+[2].

8. Decision Framework — What the Client Must Decide

These are the questions your client needs to answer before you can get accurate factory quotes. Present them as a spec sheet:

1. Purpose
Corporate gift? Retail product? Event giveaway? Employee onboarding? Determines quality tier and budget ceiling.
2. Material
SS304 (standard), SS316 (premium), Tritan (budget/transparent), glass (wellness). See Section 1.
3. Capacity
500ml safe default. 350ml for compact/coffee. 710ml+ for sports/trend. Consider end-user and market norms.
4. Insulation
Vacuum double-wall? If hot/cold drinks: yes, mandatory. Room-temp water only: single-wall saves 30-40%.
5. Lid
Screw (safe), flip (gym), straw (trendy), sport (active). Biggest UX impact. See Section 4.
6. Branding
Logo only or full-color? File format must be vector (AI/EPS). How many print positions? Body color Pantone code?
7. Quantity
500-999 (highest unit cost), 1,000-2,999 (good value), 3,000+ (volume pricing). See Section 7.
8. Target Markets
US → FDA + Prop 65. EU → EC 1935/2004 + LFGB. Multi-market = more testing cost. See Section 6.
9. Timeline
Samples: 1-2 weeks. Production: 15-30 days (standard mold)[22], 30-45 days (custom mold). Sea shipping: 30-45 days. Total: 2.5-4 months order to warehouse.
10. Packaging
Polybag (basic), white box (clean), custom gift box (premium), retail-ready (barcodes, hang tags).

9. Common Mistakes Western Buyers Make

1. Specifying in oz, assuming the factory converts correctly.
Factory hears "16oz" and builds a 500ml mold (which is 16.9oz). The 27ml gap triggers a dispute at QC. Fix: always confirm in ml with dimensional drawings signed off by both parties.
2. Not requesting pre-production samples.
Photos ≠ product. Always order 3-5 physical samples ($10-30/unit + express shipping) and test them yourself: insulation, leak test, drop test, logo adhesion. The ~$150 you spend prevents a five-figure mistake.
3. Ignoring lid quality.
The bottle body is usually fine. The lid is where factories cut cost — cheap gaskets, rough threading, weak hinges[13]. Your contract should specify: gasket material (food-grade silicone), lid body material (PP or Tritan), and cycle-tested durability (e.g. 5,000 open/close cycles).
4. Not specifying steel grade in the contract.
Some factories use SS201 for outer walls (or worse, inner walls) to save cost[5]. Your purchase order must state: "Inner wall: SUS304 food-grade stainless steel per ASTM A240. Outer wall: SUS304 minimum." Then verify with a handheld XRF spectrometer test during pre-shipment inspection.
5. Skipping third-party inspection.
A pre-shipment inspection (PSI) from SGS, Bureau Veritas, or QIMA costs approximately $300-500 per batch[23]. It catches: wrong material, bad printing, leaking lids, incorrect packaging, wrong quantities. Non-negotiable on a first order with any factory.
6. Over-engineering the first order.
Custom mold + custom lid + wrap-around sublimation + retail packaging = $8,000+ in setup and 4+ months. For a first order: use an existing mold from the factory catalog, add your logo via laser engraving, and keep packaging simple. Prove the product, then invest in custom tooling.
7. Not planning for reorders.
The first order is always the most expensive (setup, testing, samples). The real margin is in reorders. Negotiate a blanket pricing agreement for 12 months that locks in unit prices with a sliding scale based on annual volume commitment.

Manufacturing Hubs in China
